The humor and the speed of the film was praised by the reviewer of Variety, Dennis Harvey, who described the film as "funny and inexplicably repetitive." The reviewer, however Steve Barton of Dread Central just gave the film 2.5 points, pointing out the repetitive use of clichés that are no longer relevant and repetitive narrative as reasons behind his rating. Due to its special effects, the aesthetic that evokes the 1980s, and its frantic rhythm, Ryan Larson of Bloody Disgusting described it as "one very funny and insane horror film of the decade."



The small budget the film received was not going to stop Bartalos from creating a terror film that had the look of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre or The Hills Have Eyes. The fact that Bartalos had previously worked on special effects for well-known horror movies like "Frankenhooker" or "Brain Damage" prior to collaborating on "Skinned deep" is proof of his love for the absurd.

Skinned Deep is a good choice for horror lovers who want something new to watch despite its limited budget as well as its outdated special effects which could put off some viewers.
